Rethinking the Braun SK2 Radio

(designed by Dieter Rams)

Dieter Rams famously noted that good design must be honest and that the form of an object should indicate its function. This is the case with the SK2 radio, which he designed for Braun in 1955.

Today, sound-generating objects come in different forms, smaller and more efficient. However, the form originally created by Rams is still relevant and is copied and referenced in many contemporary designs.

I combined the original form of the SK2 with a contemporary music generator: the personal smartphone. Placing the smartphone in the slot allows the simple cut-and-fold object to amplify the sounds emanating from the phone’s speakers.
